A sound sac?
Stupid laptop.
Recent game where I sac'd a knight to catch king with its pants down. While effective, I'm just wondering how a stronger player would react in the situation, and if indeed it was sound. Move 18 onwards if you want to skip the rest
A strong player would immediately see that it's too dangerous to take the knight. There's no actual need to take it, and with all those unguarded squares in front of White's castled position, with just about Black's whole army bearing down on it, it would be suicide.
It's easy enough to plug the position into an engine. Fritz 5 recommends the reply to the sac as 19. Rf1, and White is -2, which is a lot better than mate. Fritz 5 has the sac as its top choice on move 18 which suggests it most certainly was a sound sac.
Just remember that it is good play when you reduce your opponent's options to just one, which is what you've done here. Do this often enough and they will eventually make the wrong, fatal move. If they reply with perfect play then good for them, that doesn't take away from your good play.
