A very nice caro kann exchange for black

this one went well and illustrates an ideal position for black in a caro kann exchange as black. With all due respect to my opponent they did not play this well out of the opening so their position crumbled almost immediately.

If white tries to remove this pin it’s best to trade the bishop for the knight. The knight on f3 helps control the center and can take part in kingside attacks which can get nasty. Also it can hop to e4 and threaten the classic exchange fork and really mess things up for black having to respond to that.

8….e6 the classic and ideal Carlsbad pawn structure is complete. the idea is to maintain this structure while attacking whites queenside utilizing the powerful open c file. Usually a minority attack is involved. We want to maintain this structure, minimize weak pieces and go for small advantages when white is forced to react. If I go up a pawn with this structure I immediately try to trade down into an endgame.
9. …RC8
a very important move, taking control of the open c file. After black castles white will generally take our knight on c6 to prevent any tricks, it is important to retake with the rook on c8 to keep this file open.
13…. qb6!

a nice double attack. If white tries to kick blacks queen, they still have 2 pawns hanging. Black will win a pawn which would heavily favor black for a win given this pawn structure.

15. … Rfc8
Locking down the c file, offering a trade of rooks. White could have taken both rooks off the board since they had their knight and bishop covering c1. (White really controls the file, but probably didn’t want to trade being down material.

16. …h6
offering a trade or kicking the bishop. The trade allows black to take with the bishop and pressure whites center pawn with an X-ray on their A file rook.
after this white pretty much gives out and goes out on his shield.
