Bd3 is indeed a good move which gives with the advantage (even after 6... f5). However, the reason that Bd3 is good is because black played the bad 5... f6 which is completely unnecessary. If for example Be7 instead of f6 black has a fine position because of white's wasted move Ng5

It seems to me that the Bd3 was a great move and I'm glad I saw it. How would you have responded...perhaps f5? If you did as my opponent did, is the game more or less automatically a loss given the best moves?
Edit: Perhaps I should say Bxg5+ would be my next move
