I don't understand why Bg6 is so much better than simply Ba6. The bishop on a6 seems more active  than on g6?

The bishop is more active on g6, covering 8 squares, while on a6 it covers only 5 squares. Moreover, square f5 is important as after 2...Ba6? 3 f5 equalises.
