This was a game i just played and i realize the end-game was sloppy, but I was looking to improve on my mid-game some. Are there any tips on what i could have done on Mid or Early game to improve my position that would generally translate to other games

? I'm trying to get into chess, since I find it as a nice distraction from college and would just like some advice happy.png

Are you with the white pieces?

Yes, sorry i forgot to mention that.

👍 So the opening was OK (a bit dull 3.Nc3 but that's my own taste) but you should not have allowed Bg4 for black, that pin is annoying. Probably better to delay castling and retain the option of 0-0-0, keep developing eg. h3, d3, develop the Bc1 etc. Whilst it's almost always wise to castle it is sometimes better to wait if your king is perfectly safe for the time being. Don't need to commit so early.

7.gxf3 is so ugly...I would have preferred Qxf3 Nd4 Qd1. Whilst that forces passivity you can eventually unravel. The damage of gxf3 is a permanent weakness.

9.d4 would have won the Bc5 because it uncovers an attack on the black queen by the Bc1. If the opponents queen is out and about early in the game always be looking out for ways you can hit it. After your Nd5 black could have gone back with Qd8 instead of blundering the queen horribly.

11. I would have gone c3 intending d4. There is time for this rather slow plan because black can do 4/5ths of nothing in the position.

13.a3...not really getting to the point. You are up a queen for a minor piece so you can look to use this big advantage by direct attacking stuff. I might have gone exf5 opening a line towards the black king.

14.Be3...ok. Bg5 was also an option.

17.e4 I don't really like, it gives d4 to the Nc6. Maybe it doesn't really matter with your big advantage but I would probably have left the centre alone and gone Rg1, grab the open file. Black can't oppose because you cover g8 with the Bc4.

19.Rxf6

And yeah, a bit sloppy with finishing it off but your advantage was overwhelming so no biggy.

Takeaways:

Give yourself flexibility in the opening and watch out for annoying pins.

Look after your pawn structure. Once it's damaged it will likely cause you an inconvenience for the whole game. If it's in front of your king it's double bad news.

If the opponent has brought their queen out early always be looking for ways you can simultaneously develop your pieces and attack it. This gains time and your position improves whilst the opponent shuffles about.

Be forceful if you have an advantage. Don't let your opponent breathe, keep threatening things.

Seize open files with your rooks and threaten to infiltrate the enemy camp.

These two especially help so much, thank you for this. I didn't even realize when I took that the queen was able to take on that piece. I feel this move probably kind of killed the pawn structure on its own, since it double stacked them which was definitely annoying later.

Thank you for taking the time to help me understand a few mistakes!

I think he means 32?  RxN#

This is well played, though.  You can be proud of this game either way, though black certainly helped out by throwing his queen away.  Your own queen throwaway was actually good vision on trying to get that back rank mate, and as stated, you almost saw it.

Thank you Jonin! I also believe he means move 32. It’s one of the puzzle type moves that I always do on there, but forgot about actual implementation during the game!

Oh right lol move 32 not 31

Right in the opening you missed a chance to gain a very advantageous position:
