3.Qxd4 is a main line in the Center Game... retreating the Queen back to d1, however, is not (Black wins around 70% in the games in this site's database after 4.Qd1).

Actually Black was quite lucky. If White had played 7 g3 the continuation 7 ... Qxe4  8. Qe2 gives White more than enough winning chances.

Black was the beneficiary of a huge blunder by White on move five.  5. f3?? simply handed the second player a hyper-open reverse version of the Damiano's Defence, which usually ends horribly for the side playing it.

Without the gift 5. f3?? you probably would have faced a more equal game.
