Why repeat an offense? To make a point. If I write, "I saw some inappropriate ads here on chess.com," do you think people will care? No. In this day, people only care about what they can see. When they can see what's being displayed, they'll take the point more seriously.

honestly, and i don't mean to make implications here, but there is a chance that you are getting ads based on the cookies you have on your computer, which are based on your browser history or spyware that hijacks ads. we haven't had any other complaints about these types of ads, and i can't find them in the known ad inventory.

as for why there are not more chess-related ads? i dunno. we sent out nearly 100 emails to different chess companies over the last month and had exactly 2 responses, neither of which has yet committed to advertise.

I really get tired of people being worried whether this is a "family-friendly" site. Its the most annoying thing: getting incessantly censored, hearing constant complaints, you get my point. The great thing about having parents is, they get to decide for their children! We childless chess freaks don't have to sit around arguing about what we would want our hypothetical children to be exposed to. You can have the children's parents do it for them. Even if they didn't, I can guarantee you two things: 1. There are much worse places kids could be spending on the Internet and 2. They'll figure it out from school, athletics, television, etc. (pretty much anything with human interaction).

I've never really been a big fan of censoring. Trying to deny kids of fundamental elements that nearly all of us were exposed to is denying them their sense of humanity. Trying to censor such natural things is... well, unnatural.

Huh. I guess it's just me then. As I said before, I don't know what would prompt it on my computer, but beyond that, I've been seeing these ads on library and school computers as well. They're ubiquitous regardless of what computer I use. Strange.

Whew. I was wondering when someone was going to chime in and remind the hyper-sensitive-to-the-natural-human-form Yanks that not all the world believes that the slightest glimpse of human flesh is porn. The very idea of that diet ad being suspect is itself suspect. The human stomach and bottom, male and female, are regularly seen in soap ads or holiday ads for time in Ibiza... and diet ads... not overly worrying.

As for the dating ad, well dating ads in themselves are generally harmless (I assume most Western children know that people date) -- but there is actually a problem, in my opinion, with it being "interracial" (this from an interracial person), because of the way it promotes interracial dating like it were a fetish rather than just part of life. "Whew hoo [insert bells & whistles] Date a black gal here, Date an Asian gal there...." ew. But most of that would fly above children's heads... the images in the ads are nothing of concern.

This is the best post on the thread. It demonstrates the ridiculousness of the complaint while bringing up the one truly disturbing part of the ads. While "Find your interracial partner" probably isn't as bad as "Find your black partner" or "Find your Asian partner" (it at least seems to support equality), it certainly isn't a fair or unprejudiced view of race.

But back to the main point, the only way an ad showing a topless man or a woman's stomach could be inappropriate for a child is if that image is linked in his mind with something inherently morally wrong. This is seen frequently in the U.S. with no such connotations, and in much of the world showing much more skin is common in public. To suggest that all children from, say, Botswana, are ruined by this, is rather ethnocentric. And if the mere suggestion of sex can cause damage to a young child, that child is unbalanced and has not been well-prepared for the world.

The opinion that matters in this case is the parent.  (Many of whom don't give a crap anyway).  But they may think that dating ads are something they don't want their kid to see.

I think website administrators are struggling with this a lot. It's not just chess.com.    I belong to a Buddhist website where I am always getting ads for "find hot asian singles!"

Admins can block certain ads (sometimes), but other similar ones pop up.   The solution is probably more on the part of the ad providers, who should consider offering more family friendly options.  Unfortunately those options are probably the least money making.

Yeah, there's ways to block the ads, but that's kind of moot within the context of the discussion, since the kids seeing the stuff might not *want* to see the ads go away.  The parents (who may or may not be paying attention) would have to do that.

Subtlety and Nuance do not carry well on a forum post unless you are lucky or  skilled at writing. If the whole is a joke please say so at the end or expect many to take it serious. I'd hate to see added censorship on this site

p.s. I wonder where someone might get the cookies that would produce "sexual" ads.  Hmmmm!

It was intended to poke fun at the fact that ads like these are displayed while threads with a few unclean jokes are being locked, edited, or deleted left and right. I apologize to anyone I may have offended or angered.

As for the cookies, I really don't know what could have caused it. I've seen these ads displayed on three computers that don't belong to me. However, everyone's entitled to their opinion, so you can believe whatever you want to believe, scut_fargus. Smile It doesn't affect me.

Perhaps some people had a little bit of a laugh . . .?

That's what makes it interseting and worth following actually.

In almost any thread the issue is almost always resolved in the first barrage of replies.  Only the really good ones, the posts that tap deep into the subconscious  marrow of many people's fears and insecurities, start to take on a life of their own and morph into something truly intriguing and are worthy of prolonged attention.

totally.
