Choose to attack instead of defend

Here is a game that I played yesterday. Nearing the end of the game, I decide to exploit open files and relegate my queen into guarding a simple diagonal, but an important diagonal for sure.

The lesson here is: Pay attention! No matter how close you are to checkmate, make sure that you aren't about to be mated first!

Wow, what a blunder. I make this kind of mistakes all the time. Being all focused on your own plans while becoming blind to your opponents'.
