Hmm I'd replace the knights with Mr X-ray Man (Men). They move one step at a time diagonally forward (not diagonally backwards) or one step straight back. They can attack pieces exactly two squares (not more not less) away to each side. Funky eh?

I've always liked the cannons in Chinese Chess that can only attack and capture pieces through another intervening piece.
there are many other variants of chess, redsoxfan
for example, there are chancellors (rook + knight) and archbishops (bishop+ knight)
however, I must agree with TheGrobe: the bombs (pao) are lethal
they should be added to chess
bishop and knight combo in one piece

How about a cannon? They had that in Chinese chess but it can also capture like a rook as well as capturing a piece behind a piece.
It would be worth 3 points
I would make a special pawn that can capture (and move sideways in addition to all its original abilities.

I would like it to be a wall, it can move one space forward at time and can't capture any piece or be captured, it can only block your opponents pieces. Once it reaches the edge you can remove it from the board but it can't be promoted.

I like this idea, but instead of capturing like a rook just make it capture one square away, but if an opponent was next to it it could not capture and instead of a cannon make it a catapult.
How about a priest that can convert your opponent's pieces like in age of empires.

actually there is a type of chess in which that occurs, it is called atomic chess, and apparently if any piece captures, any piece within 8 squares is as well
if you had to replace three pawns with a new piece, what would the piece be named; what would it do; how much would it be worth; and where would it be placed on the board?
