Engine telling me this is best move, but I really don't understand why

Hey all,

Just played a game against the adaptive 1600 chess.com bot, Devon.

In the game review, the engine flagged one of my moves as a missed win, and then told me that moving c4 to attack the bot's queen was the best move. However, it seems as though black's queen can just capture the attacking pawn, and still be in a fine position. Is there something I'm missing here? As a side note, I'm also fairly new to chess and chess.com.

Thank you!

It probably has to do with the fact that if the queen captures then the e4 pawn is undefended. Also your c pawns are doubled, so they're a bit redundant. Trading one of them for black's e pawn is tempting even if the "tactic" ends there.

Anyway click this button.

That makes a lot of sense! Not only would the black pawn be undefended, but a capture with the rook would put the black king in check, that might contribute to the position.

I did check the line, but it still didn't seem like it was favourable to me.

Thank you for responding!

Yeah, sometimes the analysis is a bit silly. All it knows is that the number is 4.00 in white's favor, so it calls it a "missed win." Sometimes a "missed win" is you capture a rook for free, and sometimes it's only a "win" after a long complicated line that no human would play.

So if the line is confusing, it's best to ignore it. Just pay attention to the basic things, like you said, you put the black king in check, or like I said, trading a redundant c pawn for one of black's center pawns is nice.

You have a strong mating attack if Qxc4, black has to lose material to survive.

That's a good example of an engine line almost no one would play tongue.png

If it were the only way to win, sure, some tactically strong players would find it, but for example after 4.Bh6 white is permanently ahead i.e. you don't have to sacrifice a knight and see some complicated thing.

White has a strong attack and forcing the Q to move makes white's attack faster. Not sure whether black can survive if Q doesn't take on c4 because now white has a central pawn attack as well as all the threats and open lines.

I certainly hope that I'd play it.

I just think it's a waste of time to find that when other things win.

Remember when I looked at your games, I noticed how solid you play?

I'm not the player I once was, which is why I only hope I'd play it.

Back around 1993 I tried to teach myself to think like an engine. I had one of the strongest chess engines at the time and was intrigued about exploring the most odd and innocent looking moves to find an attack. I didn't mind going right down on time because I could play fast fairly well. I would say it changed my play forever and at the time it made me a lot stronger although after a year doing that I changed my style to more positional again, because it was putting too much of a strain on me since I was playing over 80 rated games per year not including all the rapid tournaments I played in. But when I'm playing well I try to find the most efficient way to win, which doesn't mean I want to win the fastest way possible in the least number of moves. I try to play the line that makes the win as near to 100% as possible. I would pretty certainly play c4 in that position because it deflects the Q and gains moves. The Nd2 line is very strong. That's why I say I hope I could still find it over the board but it depends on the mood one's in. I haven't played competitive otb for some years. The last league game I played in I should have beaten a FIDE 2300 with black. I just needed about five minutes extra to work out the win. He told me I'd given him the hardest game he'd had all year. That's four years ago at least. Our club more or less folded after that season. Lack of players.

Why wouldn't Qxd3 on move 2 if white doen Nd2?
