Failed Attempt at the First Rank

A series of early blunders on my part led me to sacrifice a minor piece to gain mating chances (?).

I'm not certain, but at 17 a series of moves put me in what may have been a winning position, but that's where I need help.  I have some different variations in the move list.

I know what I shouldn't have done early, but what could I have done after 17?

27. Red3#

There were some problems earlier.

You say 8. Nc3 drops a piece. But there is no way to save yourself from losing a piece at this point. 7. Bg5 lost the piece.

 11. g3 is a waste of time.  You can develop your bishop on the other diagonal.

 18. Ne5+. I don't see any reason to play this move, it just gets your knight into trouble. You can just 0-0 and activate your rooks without losing your knight.

Well, that wasn't so hard.  Can't believe I missed THAT one.  A breather would have let me see that.

True on 7 being the true blunder, but both 7 and 8 were dumb like rocks.
