Failed Sacrifices

Hi everyone!

There is an abundance of games where one player won by a brilliant sacrifice.

These games usually get a lot of attention and are often remembered decades and generations after they were played. Rightfully so, of course. Names like Morphy, Tal, Fischer and many others come to mind.

On the other hand there must also be scores of games that were lost after a promising sacrifice.

I am not talking about obviously incorrect sacrifices, gross blunders or games from weak amateurs, or small sacrifices like a pawn or an exchange, but of games where the second player showed excellent defensive skills, found amazing defensive resources, maybe counter-attacks or even spectacular counter-sacrifices and played very accurately.

In my opinion it is an injustice to the great definsive performances of such players, that they are not getting more attention! I am sure most of you will agree, that - at the very least from a psychological standpoint - the task of defending after the opponent sacrificed is harder than it is to be the attacking player.

So I am looking for games of esteemed master players from past and present times, that were won by the defending side, after their opponent played a seemingly strong, maybe even correct, sacrifice.

Can you think of any such games?

Very much looking forward to your contributions!

Look up Carlsen-Caruana at the recent Sinquefield Cup...

Thanks!

I'll take the liberty to add a diagram with the game, for convenient viewing:
