Great Rook sacrifice or just blunder?

Yes. Qc2 makes no sense. It just runs into Black's plans.

I sacrificed THE ROOOOOOK.

It was a brilliant sacrifice, but White did not follow it up correctly.

Why did you know if you got the dark diagonal for the bishop you would win?

According to chess.wintrcat.uk it is a brilliant move, you even got a great move too by playing qg5+

Just looking at it without using the analysis I thought you misplayed. I thought the correct move is 39. Qg4+, which forces kh8, whereupon you play Qf5, gaining a tempo.

After the line you play, obviously ...h5 is a blunder but he has Rg8 instead and the black K escapes.

The sacrifice was viable in my opinion at least: but not brilliant, in that it's fairly obvious.

Agreed, it's the wrong square. It seems ok if white wants to play d5 and then b4 if black plays Nc5, but black could conceivably play a4 in reply to Qc2. I think the Q is misplaced there. Also the B is usually misplaced on d3 in the KID. Better on e2.
