Help Analyze my game

Hi!

So, my backstory: I started playing chess last week; we had some free time during calculus class and my friend taught me the game, I've quickly become very interested.

I've been playing on chess.com now, here is a typical game of mine (one of the few i've won, also the most recent I played)

I'd like to have some people more experienced and better than me analyze my play and show me where I could have made much better plays and where I simply made mistakes, thanks alot

so my main questions:

how could I better utilize tactics? and did I open well, or did I leave myself in bad position to start? if its the latter how could I have done better?

Well, since you are new to the game I would suggest this concept.

DEVELOP GOOD CHESS HABITS EARLY!!!

You lost your queen in this game but still got the win which ultimately is the
object of the game.  To go from a 900 to a 1200 is not that difficult if you
TRIPLE-CHECK each move as you learn this game.  You will instantly eliminate
almost all your blunders and many of your mistakes.  It will take much study
and practice to reduce your inaccuracies.  To go from a 900 to a 1200 to a 1500 here at Chess.com by June, 2011 is a realistic goal to set.  After that the
improvement will be much slower.  Good luck!

Much better played than the first game, you didn't leave pieces en prise and spotted when free material was offered to you.

To improve you just have to get more experience and train your board vision (learing basic tactical motifs)

  • Play a lot against people who are slightly higher rated (+100pts)
  • Read Novice Nook -columns by Dan Heisman (ChessCafe)
  • Try out some tactics book or software (online or dvd)

Good luck!

You are right where you should be given that you just started, meaning you are simply too new to absorb much advice.  If you absorbed "dont move the same piece twice in the opening without a good reason" from the above, that is good, and about all I would expect you to get out of it.

Your tactics are what one would expect given that you started last week, which is too say they are at true beginner level.  (That said, the second game was much better, your tactics are likely improving some just by playing.)  All the fancy positional learning in the world wont help if you drop pieces and dont take hanging queens.  Tactics are something you can improve quickly and dramatically with practice at Chesstempo.com.  Go there now.  Come back in 3 weeks and post another game.

In other words, at this point, talk is pretty close to useless.  I mean, sure it helps to have someone say "have you developed (taken out) all your pieces yet?  If not, why are you moving that one again."  But beyond that, you have to practice, and tactics is what you should be practicing.  Chesstempo.com.
