Help with my amateur's mind (game against Magnus, age 9)

Hey everyone. I took up chess a couple years ago and I'm really enjoying it. One of the things I'm really struggling with, though, is positional play in the middlegame. I notice this most when I play against a computer like Play Magnus, where there aren't the sort of shocking tactical errors you see in blitz games at my rating. I'll play an opening that keeps me equal or even gives me an edge, but almost inevitably my game will fall apart at some point.

In the game below, I managed to avoid self-destruction and ultimately won, but it's clear that there's still lots of room for improvement. I've annotated the game with what I was thinking about when I made various moves (where I could remember what I was thinking). What I'd really appreciate is feedback on where my thinking is wrong, and what the correct line of thinking should have been. Any help would be much appreciated.

e4 e5 Kings pawn looks drawish :D

"Drawish" would be a huge improvement on my record against 9-year-old Magnus.

I was looking at this question in the chess.com Android App. And it would not let me see more than the moves e4 e5. Now that I switched to the website I can see all of the moves.

Considering your ratings, and the relatively short time you've been playing, that was a really well played game. There were arguably one or two moments where playing too much by 'ideas' caused you to miss mini tactics, for example: 18...Nxf3+ and ...Bxb2 next is stronger, but on the whole you did really well. Good job.

Thanks so much! Apart from the overlooked tactics, do you see significant examples of bad positional thinking, particularly on moves where my annotations explain what I was trying to do? What I’m mostly trying to do is improve my positional judgment, so that even when I don’t see obvious tactics I can still form some idea of what to do.

Honestly pretty good!

The thing about the younger ages of Magnus (9 and 10 mainly) is that they REALLY look for tricks.

If you play Magnus at max age, he will slowly and methodically beat you.

The important thing against Magnus 9 and 10 is not to be funky. Play a solid move. Look for an opportunity to gain a pawn. Keep the advantage, win the game.

yeah, I've played the magnus app and it's an absolute headache, it will play tricky moves all the time. I only learned to get wins (still less than 50% of the time) by accepting I was going to have enter endgames where the passed pawns would do the damage.

My honest appraisal of this game is I don't understand why you are lower rated than me as that was a very well played game.

Thanks! I've only recently started playing daily games, so hopefully my rating on them will increase. My rapid rating is low in significant part because I often end up in time trouble (I also resign more games than I'd like because one of my kids starts screaming).
