I mean he didn´t check me once and I had only one square. Then a queen and boom, checkmate.
And that's what checkmate is about!
He was aware of letting your king a room to move, sufficient to evade stalemate.
But wouldnt he have to check me before mating me?
It's not a requirement that there must be preceding checks.
(Think of scholar's mate)
However, giving checks beforehand is very common and is usually the path to the actual checkmate.
