Nice smothered mate, but you blundered your knight, (fxg6+ is a check)

If white takes the knight then its QxpG2 and mate for black

What a great game. I love it. 16. … Ng4 doesn’t seem like a blunder to me. I think it should get a double-exclam brilliancy mark. Your opponent played like the Nelson-bot, only moving the queen. Very nice smother-mate finish. 🙂

The opponent takes the knight with check though, correct me if I'm missing anything

Yes, the discovered check. Funny how chess blindness hits at times.

Yes, White can take the knight with a discovered check. That's why Ng4 is such a cool move! Black puts the knight on g4 and says "go ahead, take the knight, if you dare". If White does take, they get killed very fast. And I love the pieces in the final position! Every one of the black pieces has contributed, while White's entire queenside is still sitting on starting squares, useless. What a fun game. happy.png

And there is mate on C1 (RxB) if white blocks BC5 with their rook to F2

Good job ! Chess.com puzzles help in spoting in game tactics tho they don't win you the game unless you actually get said tactic

If you let Stockfish a while, it show that 16…Ng4 !! Is actually a best move! It is actually much more impressive than well know smothered mate. Brilliancy by accident may happen too!

You got very lucky that your opponent didn't resign right before checkmate
