It's weird that the Black king did not head to the e8 square with 13...Ke8.

Couldn't black have just played Ke8

Black still has some complications to sort out after 13. ..Ke8 14. Bxc7 e6! 15. Rd8+ Ke7 16. Rfd1, but yes, it's better than getting mated.  In any case, white has more than sufficient compensation for the queen, so the sacrifice is sound.

The analysis rates the sacrifice as one of the top moves even if black plays Ke8, because the black king is just so weak and white also gets a passed c pawn after Bxc7. Nice find.

I enjoyed playing that back a time or two.
