I just beat a 1900! Interesting tactics, discovered checkmate

It's probably not much for some of you, but for me as a 1300 beating a 1900 is huge. It was a pretty messy game, which I think has some interesting tactics as well. I'm kinda glad I found those as well, as I needed them to recover from a completely losing position. Probably didn't really deserve it, but I'm happy nontheless. What do you guys think?

And yeah. Who doesn't love a discovered checkmate?

Great game man. 25. Nf6 would have shaken him.

You did miss some stuff, like missing 26. Qd3 would not be acceptable for a 1900. But you are 1300, and the truth is, you just out-skirmished a player 600 points higher rated than you. Overall, you can definitely be proud of this one.

Thanks! Goes to show that even from games you win you can learn a lot. When I saw I missed 26. Qd3 afterwards I was stumped. I realized my knight didn't have to move, so just wanted to keep making threats. I just failed to realize that I could threaten the exact same checkmate in a way more dangerous way (combining it with other threats). That would've sealed the deal immediately.

Also I think I should be more aware when it comes to trapping pieces. I let my rook get trapped, and then later failed to trap his bishop (and losing a pawn while trying to do so). But all in all I'm definitely proud. And it's a big boost in confidence knowing that I can not only beat players in that rating range, but also doing so with some blunders and coming back from a losing position.

I'm not going to say I'll ever reach 1900 myself, but I have good hopes that 1300 isn't the ceiling for me happy.png.

Your ceiling is what you make it - I think you probably can make it to at least 1600.
Nevertheless, you can let this win give you confidence and help you internalise that you have a chance against anyone you play!

IMO, consistency and minimising blunders is one of the most important things, if not one of the most fun things, to focus on in order to gain rating,
Sun Tzu said it best:
"To secure ourselves against defeat is in our hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself."

Good luck in your chess journey! happy.png

Good job, never underestimate yourself. Just do the right things over time and you will make more progress than you think.

Nice game!

Thanks all! We got matched because it was a tournament game, so that probably wouldn't happen if it was a regular match.

Absolutely beautiful!

Your rating ratio is:

1905/1327 = 1.4355

If you are 100%, then he's 143.6%

That's an amazing achievement!

I hate to ask but, what's the time-ctrl?

I play 4.Nf3 too. I know that 4.Bf4 is the correct, and as usual, I don't care. Seems like even in 1900+ they don't know about the 'secret' rook swing - a5, Ra6, Rh6.

After 4.Bf4 black can equalize with Nc6 Nf3 Bb4+ and if white hangs onto the pawn with Nc3, you take with good compensation, while with Nbd2 you take the free e5 pawn after Qe7 and black is able to keep the bishop pair.

In my opinion the critical line against the budapest is the alekhine attack, 4.e4!

"Reshevsky likes to put pressure on his opponents, he didn't want to be a pawn up and defending" - that's the way!

(the truth hurts lol, everybody loves Finegold)

Sammy likes to put pressure on his opponents. One time when he was playing against a 14-15 year old in a big open, his opponent was in time  pressure. Sammy rocked back and forth in his chair, fidgeted a lot, adjusted pieces on his opponents move, and hovered his free hand over the clock.

GG man, nice mate!

Nice win!

Also I have seen "undeserved" victories before (people boasting about beating a high rated player when it was obviously a mouseslip) and this is not one of them. This was a wild game that you emerged victorious in. Congrats!

Wow thanks all! Didn't expect to get this amount of comments. Also nice to learn some things about the budapest, because I don't really face it all too often.

The time control was 15+10 by the way. Wouldn't be able to do this in a blitz game I think haha.

The best I've ever had when I was around 1300 was someone in the 1600s who probably was tilted and aborted too many games and I beat them. It is an accomplishment and at this level, I don't see someone a few hundred points above me as significantly better than me not until I reach 2000+ where it really does matter. Great win none the less
