I need some advice

Hello everyone. I’m 18 and I’ve been playing OTB classical chess for about two years; all the chess I play comes from myself, I built all my knowledge from the thousands of games you can find on my account.

I’m playing in a 90+30 tournament right now, and, after round 4, I had a win, a draw and two losses. Today I was paired with a slightly lower rated player than me, but far more experienced (I am black); however I, coming from a series of very accurate games, felt pretty confident about it. Also, a win would have been very important to gain some elo (I was at -8 after round 4) and to get a better placement in the <1699 category (I was 4th, half a point behind the first three).

You can see the game ended in a draw. While I’m pretty happy with the precision I displayed in this one, I’m still disappointed because I think I did nothing to try and win the game, I just passively followed the position until all the material was gone.

Given all the premises, what should I improve in my game? How can I avoid being passive and drawish and try to be more forceful? What did I do wrong in this particular game?

5...Bd6 trades your good bishop Bf8 not on the color of your pawns for his bad bishop Bf4 on the color of his pawn d4. Better accept the pawn 5...dxc4.

Yeah, that’s also part of my lack of opening preparation. Thank you for the advice, I’ll study the 5… dxc4 line

It was your choice. Trade down to a drawn rook endgame or keep the pieces on the board and go for a win.
