not realy. black would win this easily. after Kf5. Rf3 Kh4 black is lost.

Jenium

Looks like a draw. I don't see how black's king could hide.

This does not make sense. How is Kf5 possible, from the given position, for example?

@#4

3. Rxf1 EDIT: Nevermind, then Kd2 should win.

udemiray1

nope

1...Kf3

if he plays Rf6+

2.Rf6+ Ke3

3.1 Rxf1 Na4+ (or any simple queen move which dont take the rook) 4.bxa4 Qxf1 -+

3.2 Re6+ Ne4 -+

3.3 Rf3+ Kd4 4.Rd3+ ( Rf4+ Ne4 -+) Ke5 5.Re3+ (Rd5+ Nxd5 -+) Ne4 -+

if he plays Rg3+

1...Kf3 2.Rg3+ Kf4 3.Rf3+ (3.Rg4+ Ke3 4.Rg3+ Rf3 5.Rxf3+ Ke4 6.Rf4+ Ke5 7. Rf5+ Kd6 8. Rf6+ Qe6 9.Rxe6 Kxe6 -+) Ke5 4.Rf5+ (4.Re3 Ne4 -+) Şd6 5.Rf6+ Qe6 6.Rxe6+ Kd5 7.Rd6+ (7.Re5+ Kd4 -+) Ke5 8. Re6+ Kd4 9. Re1 Na4+ -+

oh wait, overlooked that Black has a pawn move ...

This is not a draw, but a win for black. The stalemate-threat makes it tricky though.

1.Kf3 2.Rg3+
    ( 2.Rf6+ is easier to deal with: 2.Rf6+ Ke4 3.Rf4+ [3.Re6+ Kd4 4.Rd6+ Nd5 -+]
3...Ke5 4.Rf5+ Kd4 5.Rf4+ Ne4 -+)

2...Ke4!
( If the black king heads for the second rank then the rook keeps checking from the third rank: 2...Ke2? 3.Re3+ Kd1 4.Rd3+. The only way out is: 4...Qd2 5.Rxd2+ Ke1 6.Rd7. Black has lost his Queen and still has the same problem as in the initial position.

3.Re3+ Kd4 4.Rd3+
    ( 4.Rxe1 Nd1+   -+ )

4...Ke5 5.Re3+ Ne4  -+

So the basic idea is to bring the king to a square where it's possible to interpose the knight after a check from the rook. As soon as the knight moves there is no stalemate anymore and black will win easily with his extra material.

visweshvaran

no black easily wins ,

it may draw due to the repetition of moves

4km41

its a draw. After Rf6+, Ke3. Then Rxf1. This is a draw.

TroloBoy1

easy win for black- if the rook takes the wueen, we check with kinght a4; if the rook checks us we can move the king until the knight is able to block checks.

4km41

@troloboy1, why would white rook take the queen, if he wants a stalemate???

TroloBoy1

as i said, if he doesn't, the knight will block. if you STILL aren't convinced, look at the 4th post.

melkisgoedvoorelk

Dear 4km41, after your proposed variation black first plays the knight to d1 with check and only then takes the rook on f1. Wins easily.

Sub1000

Nice necro. Does look like a draw though. If black ever captures the rook, then Q and R must vacate 1st rank, or the knight must move so Ka2, all while avoiding 3-fold. Perpetual checks arnt stalemates anymore I think, just 3-fold.

And FWIW, "3-fold" doesnt have to happen in order, just has to be the same move 3 times even if you throw in a slight variation.
