Is this a sound piece sacrafice, and why?

Hello, I am a pretty new players, but I have been reading chess books for the last year or so.  I read the art of attack, and I think this is a sound sacrafice, but the defending queen seemed to be on a good square, and that is what throws a wrench in attacking plans. that is what I read anyways.

I am not sure though, and maybe white should of played more according to the position?

Any help would be awesome!

No I don't think it is sound, you opponent simply blundered on the last move.

nah, it's not. 12.Nxh7 Qh4+ 13.g3 Qxh7.

1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 (e6, Nc6 are alternatives) 3.d4 cxc4 4. Nxd4 and white's position has developed harmoniously.

Yeah basically play Nf3 to prepare d4.

Absurd

What you ended up with was more of a closed Sicilian - in which case you'd just normally play 2. Nc3 rather than d3.

is Nc3 played instead of d3 on move 2 for white so d5 could be met by Nxd5 winning a pawn.  Nf6 could be played, but each side would still loss a center pawn so it looks even to me

Nf6 would defend d5 I guess, so in the closed Sicilian, white attempts to control d5?

As for the piece sacrafice, I should of looked for any checks or hung pieces, and you can see the queen is on a square where it can readily defend, I guess if the queen is not, you could have something going on a kingside attack

That's one of the themes, yeah, you'll often see g3-Bg2 (increasing the grip on d5).
