Learning to SACRIFICE

Watched YouTube (I think Chess Vibes) how sacrifice can be valuable so I'm playing/studying sacrificing tactics.  Attached jpg shows *Stalkfish's suggestion on an opening (I usually play Ruy Lopez as white).

* The problem with chess com showing 'opening book' phrase is that it doesn't tell me what is the BEST move early during normal review .  Maximum says standard opening is only GOOD whereas sacrificing is BEST.  Only Analysis dives deeper.

Anyway, I thought others might appreciate sacrificing - it was a revelation to me, who normally is very cautious and do anything NOT to lose material!

The rest of the game speaks for itself.

As an aside, I am surprised that few people use Reviews and Analysis. I can understand it if playing shorter games (Blitz etc) but even during Rapid, few opponents (that I play) review their games. For me, I have no idea why this feature is ignored. I guess people learn in different ways. happy

My recent revelation about sacrificing has cost me a good 100 ELO points, hahahah! I guess prudence is still important. tongue

Experience is a TOUGH teacher ... first it gives you the test and ONLY THEN provides the lesson.

But oh Lordy am I having fun on this website! I read all your conversations here and learn from all of your games! Chess com support staff are also great.

How about this? Instead of looking for sacrifices against other players at your level, why not take a look at 20 or so of Paul Morphy’s games? You can readily find them in online databases.

Morphy’s attacks are a good way for beginners to learn about the importance of castling, the strength of having a lead in development, and how a sacrifice can open lines to get at the enemy king.

IMHO, this would be a much more effective way to learn about sacrificing for an attack than looking for such opportunities against low-rated players.

Obviously I can only speak for myself on this. I dont use Review and Analysis for the simple reason that its like being given the answers to a test. Sure youll get 100% but you dont learn anything. I much prefer the old school approach of doing my own analysis first. Real board and pieces and yes...pen and paper. Then running the game through an engine ONLY checking for blunders and missed tactics. All the "in between" stuff I go over with my coach. It doesnt do me any good to find out a position has gone from +.25 to -.25 If I dont understand what caused the change. Engines are great but they dont explain "why".

I enjoy trying to unravel the mysteries of chess as opposed to having the answers given to me.

Need premium to use the feature  :thinker Not everyone pays to play

Nope. Analysis is free and unlimited on chess.com. It's only Game review that's behind a paywall.

That 7.c4 sacrifice is really bad. All black needed to do is use his head, and on move 10 play Qf6 (instead of the losing Bf6). Black is up a piece, white has nothing.

PRECISELY! I use Review and the NEXT button to bring up points and then switch to Analysis to see what Stalkfish was thinking and why. I'm focusing on principles and not memorizing steps or facts!

Thank you! I have been studying Grand Master games here on chess com (and elsewhere) and I'll seek out Morphy's games as well. happy

Yes! After move 3, there are millions of possible move combinations (read from a teacher bot here on this website)! This is why I will never get bored with this game!

The game was kinda silly, but at 500 you can definitely get away with moves like c4, as you did.

For now I suppose it is a good strategy for you maybe until the 4 digits, but if you wanna attack you have to be good at tactics too so perhaps you should do some puzzle rush as well.

But idk I don't think you should take advice from an 11 year old who's been stuck at 2100 for half a year.

@mikewier - I found Morphy here in the games database https://www.chess.com/games/paul-morphy

Such fun!

I do regular puzzles and the daily puzzle but never puzzle rush! I shall do that also from now on - thank you! happy

@Ironguard5s - oh puzzle rush is great! I lose on time a LOT. I code for a living so moving quickly isn't normally my thing! This will be great training! I admire your rating particularly at your age! Thank you so much for contributing to our discussion!

So youre not thinking for yourself. Which is the point of my post. You would rather have the answers to the test.

Avatar of DavidWills99

WOW. How about you just go away? That would make me very happy.
