@ caveatcanis No I do not think that playing H4 is necesary.
So how would you improve White's play?
I'm finding this analysis a bit superficial, it seems more like a commentary than a true analysis. Also there is at least 1 mistake which demonstrates a lack of understanding of the opening.
5/- … Nh6 Here I would of prefered nc6 because nh6 seems so useless. Maybe it is not the case. But Nc6 gives center support and development.
The French defence is a very difficult opening to play at a high level. Often the battle is over the control of the d4 square. Nh6 is by no means a useless move, it is a preparatory move to place the Knight on the f5 square pressuring the pawn on d4 & also gaining more reach into whites position.
In the French Defence there are often moves that seem on the surface to be errors but the positional play & the closed centre allows the players some freedom to manoeuvre for position & often the loss of tempo is not critical.
If you are going to Coach & analyse there is some reasonable expectation for you to get it right. Players looking to learn from your analysis will not question what you say but will absorb it & if it is wrong they will have to unlearn it later after suffering from it in real play.
If 16... ng2, nxd4. IF ... 16 nh2, it can't move to a good square next turn, unlike ng1, whihc could develop the knight next turn.
10. be3 leads to nxe3, doubling the pawns and losing the bishop pair. Ugh, how are these lessons?
No, it leads to Nxd4 twice (or once if knight takes rather than bishop) and Rxc3.
I don't like ...g6 followed by ...Bg7. Normally black wants to play f6 to harrass the pawn chain that white has so perhaps ...Be7 and ...f6 were more in order. Why not even just play ...Nxd4 right away followed by ...Be7 and ...f6?
Also ...Nh3 isn't useless. Blacks idea is to hammer the d4 square to help his queenside pieces and pawns destroy whites pawn chain. With ...Nh3 black prepares ...Nf5 as in the game. Indeed, when black does eventually take on d5 and open the c-file its this that allows that queenside attack.
I say all this with the proviso that I'm not 2000+ rated
oh... me bad :(
