Best way to improve is to look at lost games - so given I've just got back into playing here's one to analyse please :)

Please analyze this game:

3...n-c6  Don't know if I would call it a mistake or not.  But, definitely inconsistent.  So far you have been playing for control of the light squares.  If you are going to play for the light squares then play for the light squares(with n-f6)

4..b-d6 you hang a pawn(5exd, exd 6. nxd5 and if you try bxh2 not only do you give the opponent the bishop pair in a position which will be open but after nxc7 black keeps the extra pawn)

7. nxd5?? the computer was kind.

9... b-e6  not bad.  But,  why not just nxd4 and then b-e6?  Grabbing the bishop pair(while up a piece) and helping to prepare 0-0-0.  Aren't exchanging pieces good when you are up material?

12...0-0-0  This drops the pawn.  An interesting idea.  Initially I thought whites dangerous outside passed pawn will be annoying.  But, actually I think u have a good attack (notice that white king in the center) so the pawn never becomes dangerous.

13.bxh7, Here I like nxd4 14nxd4(if bxg8 you get two minor pieces for the rook in a middlegame with the king in the center this will be too dangerous for white it seems.  eg 14.bxg8,nxf3 15qxf3, b-g4 16. q-d3, n-b4 and r-e8 is coming or sometimes n-c2 if white decided to give up the queen.)

Back to the game 15....r-g7. Again not bad.  But the opponents king is in the center(and with many holes for you to enter into because of the lack of fianchettoed bishops).  KEEP IT THERE!15...b-b4 +would once again keep a strong attack.  There are some very nice variations..Just one example is 16. k-e2, q-e7 17 q-c1, n-d4!? 18. nxd4(exd419.b-c4 double check and mate), rxd4 19.  exd4, b-c4 double check 20. kf3, q-f6+ 21. k-g2, b-d5+ and if 22. k-g2 then q-d5 wins on the spot.  Hopefully u could follow that

Hey, there I hope you can analyze my game. I'm a beginner at Chess and this is one of my recent games. I'm playing black and we agreed on a draw. I got a response that playing 44. ... Be3+ will make me forced win,, but I still don't get how.

erikido23

Back to your game timothy...Nice combination around move 20.  Personally I would have preffered winning another whole minor piece (exchanging of queens and a set of rooks on d1 then playing f5.  But, its just a matter of taste)than the rook for queen(but obviously not bad for you at all).  The rest of the game you played pretty well.  Nice win.

meilan michael black and then owlmoons new game, then katier rax and skip....Anyone else I have missed?

They sure do come in bunches.

Please analyze this game. I think I played pretty decently. At the end white totally lost it when he moved his queen, but even without that I was quite a bit better.

so much easier when I can insert a board..

erikido23

Catching up again......Nice attack.  Black didn't show any resistance though.  I think with accurate defense you would have lost

erikido23

Another one down....I don't play these types of positions from either side.      So this one was slightly difficult for me.  Hope this helped :D...

ANother game down.

I will get owlmoons last game, then skip and msc....

Thanks for taking the time to do my game. There sere several things that I hadn't seen at all.

I often play the king's gambit even when playing black, despite white's ability to hang on to the extra pawn, and quite often win. I think it's partly because it's an unfamiliar line for many players so they blunder more. That, and the better pawn centre for black.

erikido23

Glad you got something out of that.

Yes, playing that way(especially at your level) there will be a lot of blundering.  I think another thing is many times giving back material (or sacrificing whatever way you want to look at it) and playing actively many times turns out to be the best response to gambit play.  While most beginners count the material, see they are ahead and think they have to seek to trade down to an endgame(which sometimes leads to more activity from the gambiteer)

Thanks Erikido, much appreciated - definitely a strange opening now I look back at it!!

Owlmoon

Erikido, how do you find the time to do this for all of us?

erikido23

Haha owlmoon...Partly a (mostly) boring job.

But, remember as the original post says this is for my benefit as well.   I am just glad that others can benefit from this as well.

erikido23

Damn it...I spent a LONG time analyzing a game skip....and even thought I copied the analysis just in case this happened.  BUt, it only copied about the first 10 min....Try and get back to you in the next few days.

No worries :)
