Loss against Fritz on Sparring Mode, setting "very hard"

I've managed to beat Fritz on it's highest sparring level before, but this was a frustrating loss.  Unlike a lot of my games against Fritz, I really focused and concentrated on this one and was grimly determined to do well.

I seemed to have a good position and won the exchange, but around move 26 I started to lose the thread of the game.  I literally had no idea how to make any progress.  I wound up losing a pawn and then in the endgame I overestimated the strength of my lone past pawn and ended up losing.

It's just so depressing.  Why can't I play better... Cry

I've looked though the game briefly with Fritz and added some of mine and Fritz's comments, but I would appreciate any guidance experienced players here can give me.

I don't have a rating, but I think I'm about 1600-1700ish on a good day with a following wind. Laughing

The most recent version is Fritz 10.  There are much older versions which are now free to download, but don't have as many feature or nice graphics.  See Fritz 5.32 and Fritz 2.

I think on the queen exchange that your queen was in a much more dangerous position than his queen which was just wandering around pretty much, your queen was nailing that bishop on the board and the only place his rook could go was far away with no real potential at doing anything so Qg5 was probably better with f3 following exf3 Bxf3, and then you gain the rook anyways (or Qxg2# or +), with a very dangerous position for him, with the possibility for Nf4 as well.

I'm moving house very soon, so I don't want to start any more games than the 1 that I'm playing at the moment.  Ask me again in mid-August! Smile

Thanks Etienne.  I was so fixated on winning the rook that I didn't stop to consider that I might be better off continuing to attack.

Nice game, SonofPearl! I wish you had won. You had a better position for the most part.

Etienne, I think that if SonofPearl had played 20...Qg5, Fritz may have replied h4. It is not winning, but it is just uncomfortable. I think.

How about 20...Bf5 attacking the White Queen and avoiding the exchange, and then following it with 21...Be4?

I also think that around move 27, I could have given back the Rook for Bishop. I guess in a way, admitting that you can't win even though you are an exchange up. Of course, all this is in hindsight.

Lastly, I thought 35...Ne8 was better. He cannot take the pawn on b7 because of Rb8.

I LOVED YOUR COMMENT ON MOVE 53!

Great idea, chessiq!  Thanks.  I took just 1 minute 31 seconds on my 20th move; If I'd taken a bit longer to consider what the best move was, I might have seen that manoeuvre.

BTW - I was amused at Fritz's long winded description of the opening in this game: "English Opening vs King's Indian with ...Nc6 but without early d3".  What???  That doesn't make any sense to me at all, but, like I said, I don't know the opening theory at all. Laughing

LOL! That was very funny! (I am just like you, I don't know openings that well. I know opening principles pretty good, I think.)

So next time an opening like that happens in OTB play, and somebody comes and goes, "Hey, SonOfPearl, what did you play?" - you will have a ready answer!

I looked at 29...Rc8 followed by 30...Ke8.. getting your king out of the line of fire to some degree. and Fritz likes it too (around -1.00). White of course has many moves, and you can check out some of the lines if you like, but it does seem like this idea could have worked.

I think u were still in a good position after the 35th move. if u would have played h6 (36th move) and then Ng4 you could have forcibly exchanged against the Knight or Bishop and would have improved your chances of winning. Or 36th move Rd7 and with moving your a7 pawn to a6 ---. Just preveting his king to defend queen side pawns.

You are right chessiq, I alctually realised it yesterday night while I was in bed (damn chess.com, I can't sleep, only thinking about chess)... Your sequence does look very attractive indeed.
