I really like this game of mine versus someone rated 1000 ELO higher. Probably my best one ever even though I lost..

Hi,

Hoping to get some help here. This loss pretty much sums up where I'm at at present. I seem to have many games where I get my chances, or even worse a winning position and then blow it. I thought I played the opening here fairly well considering but had a few moments where I walked myself into trouble and then tried something desperate to try and save myself. During the middle stages of the game, I often felt like I had an idea but was constantly forced to change horses midstream as far as plans go, by necessity, in order to fend off my opponent's attacks. I think I still had chances to save the game even later but I'm just not tactically adept enough.

I'm 52, returning to chess after many years away. I'm watching John Bartholomew's videos, studying tactics daily here and with Chessable and watching Dan Heisman's videos but I seem embarrassingly  stuck in the 800 rating range. I accept losing as part of the learning process but I feel like I'm making the same mistakes over and over with, obvious piece hanging blunders aside, no idea they're even mistakes until I get the game report telling me so.

Should I get a coach? Expensive but maybe necessary? I've got the diamond membership here, so maybe I could better utilize my daily study time?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

@ AndrewsCampbell - Danny isn't analyzing these games, like he said he would.   I posted a great game, about 3 months ago, and still nothing.   However, I'm about an 1800 player, so I'll do a quick analysis here (without using an engine).   First of all 2. d6? is a mistake, especially if it's immediately followed by 3. d5.   You wasted a move there.   2. d5 (The French Defense) or 2. c5 (The Sicilian Defense) would have been much better.   I don't care for 9. Bb4ch?!.   The bishop can be run off with 10. c3, so it's kind of a wasted move.   13. 0-0?? was a blunder, because it left your knight hanging.  Fortunately, he didn't see it, but any player over 1500 would have.   14. Re8 isn't the best.   Yes, it protects the knight, but the e file is blocked, so the rook doesn't have much future there.   Any knight move would have been better there.   16. Bxc3?? was a blunder, because your d7 bishop was hanging.  Much better would have been Bc6.   22. a6 was a clever idea.   I didn't see b5 coming, because of your knight hanging on e7.   But it works.   26. Bc5?? was a blunder though, that gives back the piece.  Better would have been either knight to c6.   29. Kh7?? is still leaving the knight on e7 hanging (apparently, neither of you saw it though).  31.  Bd4?? leaves the bishop and knight hanging.   I think you need to work on your chess vision and tactics.   I wouldn't waste my money on a personal coach.  Just buy some tactics books and do the Tactics Trainer on here, every day.   Also get a book on the French or Sicilian Defense and memorize a few book openings.   You don't want to start off a game by wasting a move on move #2.   That puts you at a disadvantage for the entire game.

@JeffGreen333, do you realize that was a post from almost 10 years ago? Of course he's not going to analyze your games. He did. 9 1/2 years ago.

Ok, but about 3 months ago he made a YouTube video explaining how to post your games on chess.com forum posts and he mentioned this thread in the video.   So, a few of us posted our games on here, because of that video, and I was under the impression that he would also analyze them.   Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think he offered a free diamond membership to whoever posted the best game.   In my opinion, I posted the best game since that video came out, so I'm wondering where's the diamond membership that he promised.

@JeffGreen333 can you please help me annotate this?

Your rating is almost as high as mine is and you won that game.   I helped that other guy because he was like an 800 player.   Maybe DANNY will analyze it for you, like he promised??   lol

Ok, here's my quick assessment.   You played a very good opening.  Black blundered by taking the poison pawn with 18. Qxb2??   After you created that battery on the e-file, he should have immediately played 18. h6 or g6.   I guess he underestimated your back rank threat.   After your 19. Bd6, he can't move his f8 rook or he will be back-rank mated with Re8.   His queen being out of play also allowed you to mop up his pawns with your queen.   He made one last-ditch effort to queen a pawn, but fortunately you took the time to stop it before continuing your attack on his king.   Well played game by white.   Congratulations.

My Lasker Double bishop sac in the Bird Opening! Felt so good to play this game. One of my best games.

@NarutoSixPath - You have to post it as a diagram or they won't look at it.   If you don't know how, here's a link to a video that explains how.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI7lGCZP6TA
