Missed opportunities anyone?

This was a 30 minute live chess match, and I feel like I made some innacurate moves along the way.  Any comments would be very helpful.  :)

I think the game was over after 29. Ne4. Even if black had tried a better option, 29...Re6, then 30.  Nd6 Re1+ 31. Kf2! looks like game over. His main blunder was allowing the pin on his knight.

yes after 29.Ne4 white has a better position, but there is a better alternative to 29.Ne4 which wins instantly which is 29.Rd6!

In my examples below we would examine why 29.Ne4 won't win instantly.

After 29.Ne4

Lets examine the position after 29.Ne4

The black knight is being threatened, obviously black must defend the knight. Lets check 29...Re6

If 29...Re6

 So 29...Re6 fails

we should try  29...Re5

so 29...Re6 and 29...Re5 fails

How about 29...Rxe4  ?

So what is the better alternative to 29.Ne4  ?

i hope those explanation above would help understand why 29.Rd6 is better than 29.Ne4Smile

Very good analysis! It looks like 29. Rd6 is indeed better than Ne4! Anyway, in one of your lines, there is one last trick black could try.

Thanks for the analysis everyone! I enjoyed it very much.

to paul: I didn't like taking the undefended b pawn.  I actually did not even bother calculating whether it was just simply winning a pawn, and I should have.  I saw that it was undefended, and also saw that maybe taking the pawn gives away a tempo and did not calculate any further.  Later analasis proves that I should have taken the pawn.  And I learned that I really should calculate things like that,  Instead of just shrugging my shoulders at free material.

Nf1 is definently a passive move.  The reason why I chose not to play 15.ne4 is because I did not want to trade off my knight.  But if I would have realized that blacks knight could become very active, and getting rid of it by a n x n trade would benefit me, I would have played it differently.  I need to think more about the absolute power of the pieces.  Especially my opponents pieces.  The 21. situation with nd2 is proof that I should have addressed his knight at move 15.  That is exactly what I was thinking about r5d2...sadly, best move.

The next step in the analysis is to evaluate what black could have done better earlier in the game to not allow me to develop my rooks so fast, or to balance the power of the rooks in one way or another.  Maybe black should have played 7.nxd5 instead of taking with the queen?  I think there is many opportunities where black could have played a bit bettter.  Any analysis here would also be very instructive, and helpful.  Thanks everyone!  Keep up the analysis!  :) :) :)

What annoys me is how your knight is dormant most of the game it seems like... Here's my analysis.

4. h3 ~ Personally I hate pushing that pawn.. unless you capture his light bishop that just makes it easier to mate you.. This move didn't really improve your position for the entire game.

7. exd5? ~ Why wouldn't you play e5? Seize the advantage! Fight!

14. Qb3 ~ I wouldn't play re8 so that wouldn't bother me too much.. Beyond preventing re8 what does this move do? Also why Nf1? That doesn't do anything that I can see... Nf3 was better I think... Your knight does nothing for a few moves which bothers me.. It should be more involved. As my coach would say, stop fighting the ghosts! xD

19. Bd5 Good Move!

21. Bd4  Your knight is still doing nothing. How about Nd2?

24. Rbd2 Move the knight!!!

25. Ng3 Finally you move the knight! But I think it'd be better on e3. It's more involved that way and can help control the center.

27. Qb7 Yeah I think Qc7 was better.

28. f3? What's the plan here? It looks like to me your weakening your position!

30. You won on a blunder I'd say. As chess.com's engine would have said... "Play might have continued..." I'd say black is positionally busted anyhow... Too many weaknesses in his position. I might have tried b5.

Anyways, nice game as usual James! We should play again sometime!

JamesRook

I chose e x d instead of e5 because I have been experimenting with semi-open positions instead of grabbing the space and closing the position with e5!.  I like both moves...but at that instance I wanted to play a little open and try to exploit the open file with a rook.  The file stays closed if I choose e5.

28.f3 prepares ne4...

I agree...the knight move was bad.  I had plans for future use with it on f1...but it proved to be bad, not addressing the concrete situation on the chess board.

Thanks for the analysis moon...challenge me anytime :)
