My 52 Steps

the best is to play OTB tournaments. it is different from cc.
Time pressure, the atmosphere, tension etc all play a part in giving you stress and will affect your play.
Besides unlike cc, you can't move your pieces on the board.

I am afraid that games vs silicon foes is the closest to OTB chess I will be in a while. Hopefully that will change as soon as the Live chess application at chess.com is thru beta testing.
My Chess Mentor rating is 1850ish but playing against Chessmaster I sort of subscribe to "egg in your face losses".

This is a good point. If you are training for OTB, you want to perform all the calculations in your head. Also, do extra puzzles to increase your calculation speed. Also, if you have any knowledge gaps in your opening theory, get them cleared up before you get to the tournament.

Part of my New Year's Resolution is to convince myself that I can play a 1500ish game OTB. I think that it will be doable if a reduce my record breaking blunder frequency. Another challenge is to learn a little about Positional play. In the following game I managed to stay blunder free (oh, there are a few faster mates but....) and I think I played a more positional game than I usually do. Of course my silicon foe made a ton of silly moves but anyhow......
Do you think I could achive my goals?
