My first online game.

This is my first online game ever. I played it on Yahoo! Chess against someone ranked about 1200 there.  I get off to a bad start and end up winning anyway. I commented through the whole thing with my thoughts, and just want feedback. I obviously missed some things in the beginning I could use some feedback on, and just want to see how I can improve, since I probably shouldn't have won the game after such a bad start.

That trap he played in the opening is one that I actually tried out and it worked! My move order though was 1. e4 e5 2. c3 d6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. g3 Nxe4?? 5. Qa4+

The end was pretty well and congratulations!

Other than falling for the opening trap (which I do quite often) the game was played decently on your part, especially for a beginer.  You seem to have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, just need to work on calculation and tactics and you should be off to a fine start.

Yes, really pretty good for a beginner.  Try chesstempo.com to improve your tactics.

I played a second game.  I ended up winning again, mostly due to a couple bad moves on my opponent's part (but I guess that's how chess usually goes, eh?)

I did win thanks to some really silly moves on his part, but I know that I didn't play the opening correctly. I guess I should just study an opening book or something.  My other concern is the Rook vs 2 Rooks endgame. I was even up by a pawn and didn't know what to do if he hadn't resigned. I ended up playing the rest of the game against an engine making 5 second moves, and ended up having to promote a pawn after like 20-30 moves in order to win.  I know how to play endgames when it's just 1 rook vs king, but is there a website or something that explains more complicated ones like this? Do I try to promote pawns? Try to take his rook?

Any other general strategy or tactical advice is also much appreciated.

Really not worth commenting as you just outplayed your opponent.  Your very strong for a beginner, someone with a little learning obviously taught you before you started playing online.

As for the ending, yeah just keep your rooks as active as possible, eye possible checkmate threats, and the opportunity to force a rook trade (34. rd4 instead of b4 for example) and failing that create a threat by pushing pawns.

Lets see some games against a 1300+ opponent.
