Thanks, John! I will have him read your good advice. :)
Need help w/analysis/thanks everyone. :)
Thanks so much, I showed him your analysis. I am not sure what recent games we have since he's been away from playing chess for a bit. I'm hoping he'll get back into it since I think he has promise. Especially, compared to me, lol.
Personally, I think your son plays great in the opening. He really likes to mix it up. I still don't know how he lost the 3rd game but I think he was way ahead 3/4 of the game.
If I could offer him the following advice that I used to really struggle with: In chess, much like poker believe it or not, you have to be able to switch gears. What I mean is when a position switches from tactical/dynamic to a more simplified positional game, the player has to stop and change his mindset. Just because a few moves earlier you had an amazing attack and ended up winning material does not mean you should continue necessarily looking for a kill shot. Sometimes you have to change your strategy suddenly and go into a more of an endgame mindset. How to win a won game is not easy.
And pawns! Pawn play is probably the biggest difference between winners and losers. Tell him to get a book on pawn structures and to start studying pawn tactics like breaks and levers plus understand the strategy with all the pawn structures he plays.
But wow, your son plays with courage. I was really impressed and if he is steadily improving he seems to have a bright future. Thanks for sharing! I will try to spend some time analysing specific moves in the games if I can.
