OK, I've played this game for a few years now and have come to the conclusion that every one created this fabulous game. By every one I mean countrys, cultures city-states, what have you. To my best conclusion Morocco was the place. Although Asia-minor states claim, Give your best answer.

the ONLY possible explanations i have heard that i even remotely believe are:

- chess was created by the gods and was handed down to men as a gift once perseus killed medussa.

- chess was invented by the kgb as a way to distract america, but it backfired.

- chess was the result of putting one million monkeys in a room for one million years and seeing what was left in the end - a staunton chess set with a simple set of instructions.

chess is based on the feudal system.isn't it? you got your king, queen knights ,bishops, castles, and serfs( i mean pawns.) therefore it must have started in the middle ages-but who or what group started it-i dont know. i wonder if it has any relationship to the asian game of go?

Is this why my chess moves sometimes smell like a billion tons of monkey droppings?

This is the best possible response I could ask for!  I laughed my glutius minimus off.

We INDIANS were the one's who invented the chess. It originally was played by the kings of India in the courts. The queen as is now called was known in that time as Mantri meaning Minister.Through the trade with China by silk route it was passed on to the chinese n mongols. When Alexander attacked The North-West Part Of India during the reign of The Mauryans in B.C's(Long time ago) they learnt this game n hence it spread to the middle-east n slowly to the European Nations. Once It reached England they spread it to the other parts of the world as they ruled a huge chunk of land during the modern era. Since in the European Countries(especially England) The Queen had more Authority so they changed the name of the mantri as queen n they Added Elephant as Rook or Castle n Camel as Bishop n the Horse as Knight n the soldiers as pawn. n they brought abt many changes in this game. But Still we Indians r better at this game  than the rest of the world. I do agree that even the Russians Mastered it well(I mean Kramnik n Kasparov) but thats becuz we Indians got stuck to cricket n now we r back to take back our rightful position. Cheers To Anand(ELO 2792). If Rapid Chess was also considered Anand's Rating would have been close to 3000 n even better than Kasparov when he was there.

Actually what I've heard is while nothing is really sure about it, chess is based on an indian game but was created as a different game to commemorate the victory of Alexander on the mauryans. The Rook was a chariot originally. The queen was a rather recent addition of late Middle Age (there is even a reference to it in Don Quixote, as the chess version with the queen was referred to as the mad queen chess). There has been some differences afterwards too.

When The Indians used to play it when they invented it was a four player game

A game was played in India that probably much later developed into chess. The game itself wasn't chess. In fact, it's been impossible to trace the origins of chess much later that the time of Mohammed.  This early form of chess spread across Northern Africa into Spain, and possibly Italy, by means of the Muslim expansion between the 6th and 9th centuries. Alexander the Great had nothing to to with chess. England wasn't really exposed to chess until late in the game, so to speak. The Mad Queen chess (called Scacchi all rabiosa by the Italians and Échecs de la dame enragée by the French) apparently began to take hold sometime in the 15th century, at least there doesn't seem to be any mention of it prior to the time of Gutenberg, da Vinci and most specifically "Francí de Castellví, Narcís Vinyoles and Bernat Fenollar" who wrote and produced the Valencian poem, Eschacs d’amor. [ see Chess in the Renaissance ]

There are many great players among the people of India, Anand and Koneru Humpy, most noticably, and as chess continues to grow in popularity there, I suspect we'll see many more great players. But to even suggest that "we Indians r better at this game  than the rest of the world" is nonsensical and rather insulting.  People are individuals and individuals rise or fail by their own merits, not by their nationality, race, color or religion.  A country that supports these individuals is, of course, a big help, and a country that supports chess in general has a better chance of finding such iindividuals, but the ultimate success lies with each person (see: Fischer, or for that matter see: Sultan Khan).

I agree, the reason you don't see as many great american chess players is because our country doesn't support it, no race is better at chess than another, chess is a game of the mind and the reason the russians are so good at chess is because of the advanced chess training that they developed, not because of where they came from.  Problem is that people don't take chess seriously like they did back when bobby played.

What a pity that the Pandavas and Kauravas couldn't have settled their differences over a nice game of chess.

Actually you are all wrong, partially :)

The first chess-like game can be found in ancient Egyptian tombs, I can't remember much else about it. But the game as we know it originates from the Indian game, Chaturanga, of which I have recently obtained a very nice set. It consists of four armies playing on a board divided into 64 squares. Each army has four pawns, a ship (bishop), a horse (knight), an elephant (rook), and a king.

What is so cool about this game is that up to four people can play, two armies on each team. It is also more simple, in many ways, than regular chess so I would suggest making it an intermediate step if you, or a friend has trouble learning regular chess.

There is also a chinese version which is a combination of chinese checkers and chess. It has sixteen soldiers on each army (only 2 armies) like chess, but is played on the lines like chinese checkers. It is a fun game and I was lucky enough to get a set by accident. My dad went to China and Taiwan for a business trip and I asked for a chess set, meaning to play a joke, you may know how expensive chinese chess sets are (They are made of jade and expensive wood). Instead, I got this odd chess like game with instructions written in Taiwanese, a language of  which I am not very fluent :( . The only reason I know how to play is because of a school friend's father, who was kind enough to instruct me in how to play.

Sorry if you thought I was bragging about the chess sets, I have a habit of collecting them and I can't seem to stop! I started my collection with a chess set my grandfather gave me from the Phillippenes. If anyone knows of a twelve step cure for this problem, or a chess addicts anonymous, please tell me!!! :)

The Chain is India-Iran-Arabic Countries-Europe. The modern chess rules

have been established in Europe in the 15 - 16 th century in Europe (Spain, Italy).

The prevailing academic belief is that chess originated in India. Who really knows?
NinjaBear

Does it really matter where it was invented? We all play the same types of games to-date as humans anyways... errrr let's not get too heated <(o.O)> or wait, it's just a discussion x.X
