PGN and Software??

Hi board! Just getting started here, but my biggest question is this:

I've just finished playing a game and a particular website gives me the option of viewing the game as PGN (Seems to be very text based).

What can I do with this file?  Is there software that will provide an analysis for it? Or is it just for record keeping?

Thank you!

PGN is a standard format for recording chess games and practically all chess programs allow you to import or export PGN files (which may contain thousands of games) which can be 'read' by the software so that you can play through the moves.

Many people keep a database of their own games, or of famous games etc.

Any strong chess engine (the clever bit that decides what moves to play) can analyse your games for you.

Thank you!  What seems to be the engine to own these days? I noticed a few downloadables in the DL section of this site, but with so many options, It was easy to be discouraged.  Recomendations?

BTW

I had an impressive time with the Chessmaster X program.  If there are better, I'd like to know!

Arena is a great free interface which will let you install free chess engines which are either Winboard or UCI compatible.  Try a suitable engine from the download list here at chess.com, such as Strelka or Toga.  Rybka is the top engine these days, but it is commercial.  An eariler free version, Rybka 1.0 beta can be found at this webpage.
