There are lots of free database programs, and lots of free databases too.

I suggest you get SCID, with a few strong free engines (Stockfish, Robbolito), and then download free game collections from many sites. You can literally get millions of games.

Well, it's good to have it available seperately, I think. You can make different databases for different themes, or collections, add comments, flag strategies, themes, tactics etc.

It's also a very good idea to have all your own games in a database, so you can look for past (and avoid future) mistakes and blunders.

You know, I just downloaded scid and found it difficult to search games.  I need an element of "foolproof" or im lost.  Here is my suggestion for chess.com:  hire some college kid chess players to consolidate data bases and/or go through chess books of note and enter all the games in the data base.  What does a college kid earn these days?  We're all forking over good dough to the site, can't we make our data bases include games noted in chessbooks of interest?  well, not to nag, but it is a thought....
