I think it's because it protects against Blacks threat of Qb4+ while simultaneously creating a threat of your own, and you basically get to improve the position of your queen for free.

Hi, can someone tell me why Qc1 is best here? As you can tell I played axb5 which I felt like being pretty obvious and it puts pressure on the knight. Is it because the knight was hanging?
