The postgame analysis feature not too long ago used to label forced moves, but it doesn't seem to do so anymore. In positions in which one side had only one legal move, it used to say something like, "24. Kh1 is forced." Now it says "24. Kh1 is best," even though Kh1 is the only legal move.
This doesn't make sense to me. I liked the differentiation, because finding a "best" move should take some degree of skill. Yes, if it's the only move, it is the best move, by definition. Still, in my opinion, playing the only legal move in a position doesn't really involve any skill, thought, or planning.
Many times we say a move is "forced" even if it's not literally forced, because it is easily seen as the only feasible move (or set of moves) in a position or continuation. This is fine to say anecdotally, and it is also understandable that the automated analysis wouldn't call such a move "forced." We can and should refer to the recapture of a Queen as "forced" even if a horrible alternative like a King move is still a legal move. Meanwhile our analysis feature can refer to a Queen recapture as "best" because the only alternative is 15 points worse.
But for positions in which the Queen recapture is literally the only option, I think it's rather silly to say it's "best." "Forced" makes much more sense.
I would like to see a return of the "forced" label. Why was it removed, anyway?
