Rule 5?

I'm not clear on rule 5. I'd like to post a partial game for suggestions. This is a non-rated game between two elementary teachers during a lunch break. We had to suspend play do to time and will pick it up in a week.  We only see each other on Fridays.

We both have time to think about our next moves, read chess books, check chess engines, etc.  I am new to chess.com. Can I get feedback on a partial game that is ongoing? Thank you.

"5. Never post a game or a position from a game that is ongoing.  Asking for help with ongoing games is unsportsmanlike and unethical.  Need we say more?"

"You can publish a game or partial game in any format you want, with or without notes, won, lose, or draw.  If you have questions on a position, ask it. - by billwall"

I think that rule 5 refers to games that are ongoing on chess.com...But I might be completely off-base here.

I'll wait for the official response. Thanks.

Now, if this were a mortal combat chess game where both were sworn to not talk about an ongoing game, well, I would be cheating by making this request.

My teacher friend and I are absolute beginners and I paid for a diamond membership for the instruction. It's my new hobby...um...obsession. Laughing

I'm not asking for comments at this time, but below is the board with White to move next Friday with my thoughts. It looks like the g3 square is weak and White should play Qf1.

White could play Nd6, forking Black's rooks. Now if Black follows with Qxd6, then Rxd6 follows. White wins a queen while Black wins a knight. It would be better for Black to follow White's Nd6 with Qd8. White replies with Nxc8 and Black responds with Qxc8. White wins a rook and Black wins a knight.

White may choose to push the pawn at e4 to e5, grabbing more space, but then Black would reply with Nxg3, threatening White's queen.

If no comments are permitted, then I will still be happy to post the game after it has concluded for analysis. I look forward to next Friday! Cool

Even though I'm playing as Black, I am more interested in how both sides should proceed. It looks pretty even so far to me.

I assume that that rule is intended just for games played on chess.com.  However, I do think that asking for help about any game in progress is a dubious venture; if it is just an offhand game during a lunch break, why consult chess engines and all that rigmarole?

Good point. I have the good fortune to study this "game in progress" for the sake of deepening my understanding of chess. The motivation of an OTB that got suspended is helpful. Does this ever happen in real tournament play?

I mostly play these crazy 5 minute blitz games on chess.com. Perhaps I should stop, because I don't think I'm learning anything by this style of play. I don't get to play a long game that often, so, I'm just simply fascinated about the position both White and Black are in at this point in the game. It's like trying to solve a puzzle. I could care less who wins this casual game. I'll probably suggest that my opponent take a close look at the g3 square and the possible fork of both my rooks.

I can reverse that: if it isn't that important of a contest, why are you asking for outside advice (and thus making it more than just a game between the two of you)?

Good point. I'll post the conclusion of the game after next Friday and wait for analysis later. I can easily wait a week for an expert to tell me if g3 was a weak square, for example.

I think it's a good idea to play both blitz and slower games.  Blitz (lots of it) will increase your "feel" for position, and slower play enables you to get deeper into things.

What's this "feel" for position? Are you talking about pattern recognition? Mating patterns? Common tactical devices?

nd6 fork the rooks dur

kirthger5

Nd6 not good

1Nd6 Nd4

2.Nxd4 Bxd4+ very bad for white as knight will be lost

underflow

If your opponent is OK with you asking for outside assistance, then I would opine that you can post your ongoing game.  Otherwise, I feel that it would be "unsportsmanlike and unethical".

I would probably play Kh2 here, seems to me that black moves the rook (to avoid Nd6), you play e5, and you're ok.
