This is a game I played a short while ago, any comments, suggestions on better play are much appreciated.  Thanks.

Well, the reason for the loss is pretty obvious, but I can suggest a couple of things.

Move 7, you don't really care yet if he plays Nb5, because you can play a6 when he does, and he'll just have to retreat, wasting a move for him.  So, I would have waited on that move.

Move 18, you propose R5e8, which is better than what you played... but why not Rae8, putting BOTH rooks on the open file?

JCarter1-

Your opponent, White, played an opening strategy commonly employed by Black.  It is called the Hedgehog.  It's main drawback is that it grants your opponent an advantage in space.  As I'm sure you already know the three advantages in chess are(time, space and material).  The most difficult advantage to exploit is an advantage in space.

I would recommend that you read some books on the Hedgehog.  But, before reading those it would be better if you read, Pawn Power In Chess, by Hans Kmoch.

I would say that you have 2 main problems in your play:

1. Hanging pieces - as you have noted in your comments you see the mistake and the best way to improve this part is to work on your tactic . Tactical puzzle from some book ( search the forum or puzzles from web sites like chess.com or some free one )

2. Opening - When you play some opening , don't play it with some set of moves without looking what's your opponent is doing . Moves in chess are your ambitions or response to opponents ambitions. I would suggest you find some text or video ( youtube ) about basic opening principles and when you see someone doing some opening that you didn't see before you can use this basic opening principles .

Hope this helps :)

ps: Sicilian ( my view some moves for this vatiation   )

d6 - prevents e5 push ( in your game there is no peon od e4 to push to e5 )

Neb7 - prevents e5 push ( if white had e4 and f4 peons )

a6 - prevents Bb5 pining knight to king ( but there is no white bishop on that diagional )

Qc7 - prevents e5 push ( if white had peons on e4 , f4 , queen and knight to support e5 ... )
