I thought it's a blunder and i saw a fork that can give me back material, I played it and I suddenly checkmated my opponent lol.

what is a brilliant move defined as? i might have played one if i knew how they were defined

Avatar of HADES510

in the loading screen it states that a brilliant move is typically a sacrifice that leads to a great advantage or turning point in the game. others say that its a certain sequence of moves that need to be played in a certain order that also puts the player in great advantage. to me i think brillaint move is a play that has great depth with a mix of both theories. but the diffrence between great and brilliant is although it looks subtle its actually quite devastating. but this is just me and what i tell myself and i could be totally wrong. when you analyze brilliant games you can sense the tide change and the impact it had but i cant really put that feeling into words

When you review games using the Game Review feature in Analysis, it'll show you if you've made any moves that are special.

Types of special moves:

- Blunder (??) - so bad that it alters the flow of the game in favor of your opponent. Meaning you missed something major when making this.

- Mistake(?) - Not as bad as a blunder, but bad enough that it makes your position worse. E.g. giving away a pawn for free, or trading a bishop for a pawn.

- Inaccuracy(?!) - A mild mistake, if you will - a missed opportunity that would have otherwise enabled you to get an advantage.

- Miss(X) - Also a missed opportunity but of the tactical kind - e.g. if your opponent hangs a piece but you don't take it.

- Book(📖) - a theoretically accurate move that follows a set opening principle.

- Good (✅) - okay move but not the best.

- Excellent(👍) - A very good move that gives you an advantage, but still not absolutely optimal.

- Best (☆) - the optimal move according to the engine.

- Great (!) - Opposite of blunder. Makes your opponent's position worse and yours better. Usually awarded when you spot and punish the opponent's mistake. If you miss this, you usually get a Miss.

- Brilliant (!!) - A move that is both great and hard to spot. Most of these are flukes if your rating isn't high enough to spot the whole sequence that leads from these. I know mine are definitely flukes.

I've actually made one of each in this game of mine:
