Stalemate?

Hi Everyone,

I was just playing a game that ended in a stalemate and I have no idea why.  Can someone please help?  I didn't agree to a stalemate and I was obviously winning the game so I'm at a loss as to what happened.

Thanks for your help.

His king has no legal squares to move to, and his knight cannot legally move, so it is stalemate.  No idea why Ke7 was played, as it was the only possible move that could have caused stalemate.

His last move was Ke7.

how about white knight - it was free to move.I thought stalemate happens when all pieces including king are immobile.

Sure enough (like it was composed or something).

That's the whole point of the thread.  I didn't realize you could stalemate in chess, by preventing the other player from making an open move.  Haven't played chess in years and apparently was never taught all of the rules.

If I knew that would create a stalemate, I wouldn't have moved the King into that square.

Thanks for your insightful comments though.

Ok, I'll buy that.

Just curious, though, did you realise that he had no move, and if you did, what did you expect him to do?

{EDIT} Oh, and by the way, that is exactly what stalemate is, the one side has no legal moves. It is just one of many possible draws in chess. In other words, not all draws are stalemates.

I actually thought that would force him to move or since I moved to a position that prevented him from moving in a safe direction, it would be a win.  Again, I guess I didn't know the rules (haven't played a game in at least 10 years and only a handful of times with my father before that.  :(

I had googled "chess stalemate" right after posting this thread, read the rule on what it was and realized I had made a mistake in the game.

Thanks again.  I appreciate the feedback.
