It's actually a very good queen sac. Black get's quite alot of material (2 pieces and 2 pawns) and a very good position. Just look after move 16, black's knights are very strong, and he can very quickly generate a pawnstorm with f5, having maximum support from the rooks and bishop pair, and when they come alive white is toast.
In the mean time white is under(or badly) develloped and has to deal with many problems at once. He has to deal with the dangerous knights while also setting up a blockade for the pawn storm.
White resigned at the end because: Kf1 (only move) g2+ and black follows up with Bd4 i think.
I don't know why, but there is something frightening about this sacrifice...
i think its only a big mistake...but he can handle it...

Technically, materialistically speaking, Kasparov was only down a pawn, and he got incredible piece activity from it. Also, he had a bind on many squares even some deep in white's camp, he had the intiiative, white's queen was irrelevant because with his own pawns keeping it caged in, and with it being needed to defend white's king, and Kasparov had enough pressure to almost force Kramnik to give the queen back. He resigned because the king must go to f1 (if it goes to g1 or h1 then Re1 is mate I think), which allows black to queen after g2+ and Re1, even if Kramnik finds some miracle defense after Re1, black still has Bd4 which forces queening.
Strong player will understand why the sacrifice is done, its all about how well your pieces are working, Garry's are working well together and he has the attack and Kramnik is defending; that is why Kasparov sacrifice his queen.
finally i have questions why he sacrifice his queen if that move a mistake how too avoid them???
