Correct,ponz111!

I think I have seen that first position in some old soviet book. If I remember correctly, white also missed the victory in that game despite not being an engine.

1. Qd2 Qc7 2.Nxc5 dxc5 3.d6 Qd7 4.Qd5+ Kc6 5.Qxe5 followed by Qe7 to promote the d6 pawn etc...

I am 74 years old with dementia for 5 years so am proud to solve both problems. The first one  just looking at the position. The 2nd one with help of a chess engine.

Very interesting problems indeed Smile

This is a win for white but the computer does it wrong!  Fen: k7/8/5ppp/8/5PPP/8/8/K7 w - - 0 1

Nice idea,ponz111! You found a winning plan!!! But engine cant do it. He took on b6, with evaluation around +7.

Actually, after taking the pawn according to Stockfish it's still a draw. Try yourself...

the problem with kings on the corner is easy--maybe your computer not set correctly?

but after 2...Qxc5 black is better. He doesn't have to take knight with a pawn...

ponz, this is for you ( first problem, Stockfish play )

1. Qd2 Qc7

2.Nb2 Qb6

3. Ka4 Bh2

4. Qxa5 Bg1

5. Qxb6+ Kxb6

6. Nd3 Be3

7. Nb2 Bc1

8. Kb3 Bxb2

9. Kxb2 Ka5

10. h4 gxh4

11. Kb3 Kb6

12. Ka2 Kb7

13. a4 Kb6

etc.

This is a draw.

I used Lucas Chess with the Rybka engine. I checked and now find the depth has to be set to at least 10 ply for Rybka to find the correct solution. This is a good test since I now know to set it to 10 ply for my game analyses.

just saw ponzi's response, ingenious! so, that is the only way to hold? how would black make progress in my example?

Please give some actual possible moves per your ideas?

severomorskij

Pinguu91,please give me a moves for your ideas. If the white king will come to catch a-pawn,black have an idea Kg5-h4,g1Q,Kg3 and the next moves Kf3-g2 h2-h1Q.

About the first problem,for TrumanB 1 Qd2 Qc7 2 Nb2 Qb6 3 Ka4 Bh2 and in your variation,now Qa5. White can take on a5 with the knight Nb2-d3-c1-a5,than put the knight on c6.

He can't do that because black bishop will come to c3.

severomorskij

Are you sure?

TrumanB

Well, I took white pieces and played as you've told me against Stockfish 6 and the engine played Bc3 in one moment. I see no answer to that. Try yourself.

severomorskij

instead of Qa5,try Nd3-c1-b3 plan or Qd1 first.

TrumanB

Yup, this second idea works!
