Were my attempted sacs any good? Was I wrong to hand over some tempos for free to look for an opening?

Move 8 develop Bishop ready to castle, then you play h5? I think you comments cover it 'hope' 'fishing'. You need to follow your own plans; not 'wait and see'. 13. Qc8 wasted tempo and position (what about 13. c5?) 14. Qb6 ?????? 15. file wouldn't be open because of the pawn - half open maybe. 17. Something kinda more direct than whipping off the Knight. I'll stop there.

Lots of wasted queen moves (Qb7 twice) Destruction of king's sanctuary (castling position) for no good reason. A lack of a coherent plan of attack or otherwise.

However, good ending shows tactical awareness. Now you work on your positional awareness.
