what is the point of “maximum†analysis?

The engine can evaluate deeper into the variations.
Max Analysis runs for about a minute and manages to evaluate a position deeper, i.e., the engine reaches a higher search depth. The regular analysis is capped at a certain depth. Alternatively, you can do a "self-analysis" using your browser. It is very slow (runs an JavaScript version of an engine) but is theoretically unlimited.
