The Hippopotamus Defence is kinda weird to me. That's because I don't understand it. Good as yet. But I will soon
1. I find it very difficult to play against 1.f4. I know no theory in any of the lines. I dont know much theory in general anyway. Anyway. back to 1.f4, I find it very hard to play against as i encounter it mostly in blitz and as it is played rarely, i dont have any idea on how to go about it. Plus time is lost in figuring out what is going on, so I may flag.
2. Its really intimidating to see players rated 800-1200 know so much theory. I even dont know how to play against the ruy lopez. After I play my move 5 in it, the engine says the position as +1. Lol
However, white can't be worse after 1. f4 ... d5 because the Dutch is fully playable.
This variation is hard for black to play against, but it is probably a draw with best play.
I used to play 1. Nf3 ....f5 2. e4
Won quite a lot of games with it and drew a couple.
That's a surprise weapon, which can be extremely effective. It is probably unsound, but extremely difficult to refute over the board.
