Why is this the best move?

Why is this the best move? Moving my pawn to f6 gave me mate in 1. What would be the purpose of moving my Rook to  d4 if they could move their King to g5 to avoid mate? I might be missing something entirely but this is confusing.

Wow, I didn't think that Be3 stops the checkmate completely, I had thought that it would only delay an inevitable checkmate by within ten moves.
