HEY ALL. THIS POST IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A PHALANX (SYNONYMOUS TO THE HOPLITES OF ANCIENT GREECE) UTILIZED RECENTLY IN A SWIFT COMEBACK GAME THAT STILL SURPRISES ME. Firstly, I’m a noob. My mistakes are laughable, nevertheless I am King LeoNoobas and this is the legend of my 300 Spartans… OPENER My army was engaged in a blitz that wouldn’t see the end of 5 minutes. We were nearly destroyed right in the opener from noobish negligence. I was wrapped in ideas of Philidor and pawn structures, ironically developing a ‘Pawn Phalanx’ ‘island’ involving my Queen and left her without backup. This Blunder would cost me more than the fallen Rook and the many Pawns that joined her. My Bishop and Knight were at risk of being caught in a fork so I moved the Bishop to e3 forming the beginning of the Phalanx that later saves the day. Take note of that arrangement. MORE ROYAL BLUNDERING I foresaw a moment to capture a Bishop and I set my trap which my enemy played right into. To my Kingly Noobishness I preemptively ordered a Pawn to kill during my opponent’s turn, confident in my trap. But they put their Queen in a vulnerable position for my Knight to take… and the preemptive Pawn took its own precedence—by order of the King. I was unable to capitalize on avenging my Queen. The salt in the wound was that in my disbelief at my own foolish eagerness, I pointed at the battlefield at what I should have done and accidently sent the knight to b3 where it should have killed the Queen one turn ago... Expecting submission they chimed, “A thousand lag machines of the Persian empire will descend upon your servers. Our internet satellites will blot out the sun!” The lone Rook dashes to defend the king from an imminent check completing the Phalanx formation. “Then we will fight in the shade.” THE PHALANX So there we were—300 Spartans and their King, fighting in the shade against the might of Xerxes near full army save for one Pawn and one Bishop. Resources were scarce. They had taken all but 6 of my Spartans: 2 of my Pawns, 2 Bishops, 1 Knight, and 1 Rook hunting for glory. Alas Xerxes would not deliver. Overconfident in their strength, I looked my enemy right in the profile picture in lieu of an actual person’s eyes and said via messenger chat in lieu of actual speech: “Your father should have taught you how our phalanx works. We fight as a single, impenetrable unit. That is the source of our strength.” Basically, upon seeing the headless body of the young Knight the Bishop goes wild—blood drunk. The Bishop’s cries of pain at the loss of his Knight are more frightening to the enemy than the deepest battle drum. It takes 3 men to restrain him and bring him back to our road after he decimates the enemy. CHECKMATE "This is Sparta!" That’s basically it. I noticed how I developed a Phalanx protecting my king. I was aware that the Phalanx made historical strategic advantages and developed military science. The game of chess is said to translate. I was astonished as I didn’t think I’d win yet it happened so fast… and so I wanted to share it. Cheers all. https://chess.com/live/game/47847105207
