ratings are usually good indicators of playing strength but you will often find players having a good day beating someone rated much higher.

I recently played a game against an opponent who I thought would be much weaker than me; however, it did not seem so and this is how the game went. (I really thought I would crush him in just a few opening moves).
Haha so yeah not so much a surprising victor, but from the way the game was going it seemed very much unlikely that I would walk off winning. It goes to show you that you should never underestimate your opponents or they may end up getting the better of you!
(He was still no better than a 1300 or so, but he certainly played better than a 843)
