A thrilling finish

What a fun game.

Well due to being able to exploit a hole in the position, I was ahead the exchange early and the game became a theme of me torturing my opponent with two passed pawns on the queenside. I was able to promote one of my passers and was feeling quite pleased with myself and a tad arrogant.Tongue out

Now to my opponents credit he was resourceful and played a good defensive game. Never making it easy. But I had quite a material advantage and I felt I had the luxury of time to restrict his position as much as I could. Which I did.

He played 42...Nxf2 and I was like *yawn* "Whatever! Now how about I take his Q with something like 43. Rb3 Qc7 44. Rb7 and his Q is toast..piece of cake. I'll take a quick check to see if his horse can bug me and..." *gasp* To my horror after a bit of calculation I saw he had a four move checkmate with Ng4+ Kh3 Qg1 Kh4 Qh1+ Kg5 Qh6#. I desperately looked for a way out of it and saw that I could end up with either a draw via perpetual check or at the very least I could lose material (see variation) and my smooth easy win would evaporate into a harder fight.

I cursed myself for blowing it. I beat myself up for taking my sweet time and not seeking a quick finish and letting something like this happen and @!#!@# ....then I saw the combination! OMG I thought, I bet he doesn't see that! So I quietly played 43. Qc3 with a malicious grin on my face, knowing that my opponent wouldn't smell what I had cookin' in the kitchen. He would think I missed his checkmate. His moves came fast. He couldn't believe his good fortune! I could almost see him bouncing in his seat. He was about to steal a victory being way down in material! YAY!!....Huh??? wait...DOH!

What a rush! I love this game.

Interesting game.  White had to find the queen sac.  Black made his first big mistake with 16...a6? allowing the fork of queen and rook.  Black had to see this as the knight is close to penetrating.  Black should hae played 16...Nb6 so if 17.Ne6, then 17...Bxe6.

24...b5? drops a pawn.  Black should have played 24...Nd7.

33...Nd3 looks weak.  Black should try 33...Qa7 and hold the pawns.  Now White could have played 34.Qe3! (instead of 34.Rfb1) allowing the passed pawn to penetrate.  penetrate.

35...Nd3? is no good.  Better is 35...Ng4, threatening 35...Bd4 and 36...Qa7 with his own attack and holding the passed pawns.

36...Nc5? loses now.  Black had to play 36...Qa6 and 37...Bd4 to hold.
