Bot to Bot X

As previously mentioned, I'm working my way up through the personality bots, playing the White pieces, advancing to the next bot only after winning two games. All my games are played at blitz/rapid speed at the Challenge level

My last opponent was Li (2000).

In my first games vs. Li, I had totally won games but blundered in the end.  This gave me false hope. I played the next several games a bit slower to lower my chances of blundering, but they actually proved disastrous.  Li likes to play the Sicilian, my bête noire, and it took me a while before I was even able to get into a decent endgame.

Finally I won a game, though I found Li easier to beat that my previous bot opponent, Olga (1900):

I lost the next half dozen games but then won this one, completing my self-imposed task:

I inspected the first game and got surprised to see how a 2k bot makes this kind of blunders. like;

11. ... 0-0-0 ??

19. ... Be6 ?? (g2 is pinned to the king, how could it miss Bxf3)

I am at Wally (1800) grin.png I managed to draw against him so far. I actually shared it in here. He just doesn't know how to checkmate with K+R against a lone King grin.png

These bots need lots of improvement tongue.png

And congratulations batgirl. You are are so cool. I like you. I mean.. you know.. your play and things tongue.png

Li is not "Good", she seemed good when I started playing chess and the following months or so but seemed lost when I played her. She blundered a simple fork.

Well, 11...0-0-0 is not really the blunder, it was the previous move that lost, and 19...Be6 is not bad because the suggested 19...Bxf3 is met by 20.Qf5+. It is my understanding that the ratings for these bots are roughly intended to be as if the players were playing something like game in ten minutes each; at this time limit 2000 rated players do make blunders, though not usually direct, one move blunders. If you are taking something like 30 minutes or so per game, you should expect to beat bots with ratings close to your own rating. The level of play of most human players rises rapidly with more time, so this has to be considered when you look at the bots' ratings.

These bots move almost immediately.  I try to play at a blitz speed which probably accounts for some of my more embarrassing blunders i my lost games.  I don't think many of my games have exceeded 10 minutes.

It seems based on your comments that your results against the bots would, if rated, give you a rating quite a bit higher than your actual chess.com blitz rating, maybe something like 300 elo better? Taking White every game would account for perhaps 35 elo or so of this. Actually that's not much different than my own experience with the bots, I would also get a rating maybe 200 above my chess.com rating. On the other hand, Hikaru has struggled to beat bots with ratings below his FIDE rating (and way below his chess.com ratings), though he was playing at something closer to 3-5 min blitz speed rather than ten. Maybe the weaker bots are overrated, the top ones not (based on game/10 for the human)? Or maybe playing the same bot repeatedly is not a fair way to judge it, since you learn its weaknesses.

Of course, you have to take into consideration that I lose most of my games.  Once I hit bot (1700) or so, I could only win 1 out of 8 or 10 games.

That sounds about right for your chess.com rating, but then you should never win against a 2000 bot, so something is a bit odd. I suppose the bot ratings are a bit generous on average, but not by any large amount. I would bet on humans with the same ratings against the bots at ten min, but I'd bet on the bots at 5 min. Maybe 7 min no inc (or 5 min plus 2 sec inc) is the time control that would make the ratings most reliable.

Unfortunately there is no option to use a time control with these bots.

Yes, I know, but you can go by the elapsed time for the whole game and subtract one minute as the estimated time taken by the bot. So for example if you want to play game/10 you just have to finish the game 11 minutes from when you start. Of course you can just estimate how long your games average, but of course an average game time of ten minutes is much higher quality than a strict game in ten time limit.

Ah... Good 💡 idea. I ve played a game against a bot above my rating and it was too easy compared to normal human beings. Not a big fan so far. Maybe if there was an option?

power_9_the_people

Actually there should be an option also ''win the game'' for when you're desperate

I find the bots, especially over 1700, tactically superior to humans. While I only occasionally play anyone over 1800, few people have tied me up in the Gordian Knots I routinely find myself in against the bots.  I tend to think that in programming the engines to play less optimal moves in order  to reduce the rating, opportunities arise that you may not see when playing another person. But conversely, bots don't usually fall into the same traps that people do.

I find these posts really entertaining, they are relevant and have enough spice to make it worth my while to read the entire post and thread.
